The novel describes four or five separate stories about people who live in Drumbeck, each one a powder keg in its own right — so not only is the tension in each of these microplots ratcheted up, but each one of them increasingly seems to relate to the case that Marjory and co are investigating. This moody and arresting thriller is perfect for fans of Tana French. A woman is found not far from a man's house, unfortunately for him he knows the woman intimately. Fleming is a farmer's wife, mother of two, daughter of elderly parents, and dedicated cop. When a second victim is killed in what seems a random shooting, the fear in the town becomes tangible. The combination of detective story with domestic drama is expertly handled by Aline Templeton, the result being highly readable — though the crime investigations seem to me not as realistic as the slice-of-life aspects, on the whole. Or a calculating murderer on the run? It is a well written suspenseful addition to the series.
Now, this case proves to be a real challenge for Marjory and her team, as it transpires upon further investigation and discovery of the woman's identity, that Keith Ingles may not be the only one with motive to killing her. . The plots are quite complex but believable and the characters very human with a good range of emotional expression and complexity. Laura Wilson, Guardian Templeton can always be relied on to provide a well-written, cleverly-plotted, old-fashioned whodunit. Matt Lovatt, eponymous owner of the island, is at the centre of a series of escalating crimes — could someone be targeting him? As in the two previous books, the characters are well-drawn and believable. Euro Crime All the characters are well-drawn and the tension is maintained throughout… With many surprises along the way, this is an excellent mystery and highly recommended.

I enjoyed this one as much as the other two except for the fact that quite a number of characters are introduced early in the book and I found it hard to follow at first. This is an intelligent, character-driven novel, skilfully plotted and well-paced from its leisurely start to its moving and unexpected climax. On a beautiful, eerily quiet May morning, a girl is found brutally bludgeoned to death. She's so human that I sometimes half believe she's real rather than a fictional character. Following the sound leads him to the bludgeoned body of the woman whose testimony sent him to prison for robbery. It shows that choices have consequences and it is best for people to live well with other people and live without pretending to be or to have what they do not have. I've read of good coppers, bad coppers, obvious suspects, suspects that I wouldn't have guessed, etc. I have belatedly added a new shelf - ' Waiting Rooms', not that I am in need of medical and other professional services, but my elderly clients are. And Fleming struggles to cope with what the truth reveals, not only about her father but about herself. I found myself constantly re-reading sentences trying to sort out who was saying what. I really liked this one.

Yorkshire Post Templeton writes gripping but intelligent thrillers… Amid the plethora of crime fiction, there is nothing quite like her, and she could well prove to be the most enduring of the new breed of Scottish thriller writers. He just got out of prison and gets scared and does something that will haunt him. He was always dressed in a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt and he played his part well to solve the mysteries. Another murder ties into the first, Marge is having problems with, and due to, a couple of her officers, and her husband offers their staff cottage to a man whose wife hates Marge.
She has become the crime czar of the Scottish small town! One of my favorite activities. But Templeton brings them all together nicely with some wonderful twists. A minor point - the formatting in my Kindle edition was a bit off - the paragraph indents were of varying lengths! I was really surprised by who actually did the crime -I only had an inkling as the cop blurted out the name as he was knocked out I enjoyed the book and Aline templeton still has the writing ability I like the fact that they are based around a particular police station and it shows perfectly how one persons undermining can effect the whole place. In parallel with these plots, we learn about the seaside community of Drumbreck. Also there are leftover issues from the foot and mouth epidemic of Cold in the Earth that land a family who lost everything in the cottage on the Fleming farm. Her books have been published in the United States and in translation in several European countries. It shows that bad things can happen to anyone and it shows a world where people are friendly, trustworthy and good friends and neighbors. Crime Squad I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed this book. Where many fall down is in plotting. Her characters are so beautifully drawn that turning the final page is like bidding old friends farewell.
And there were a few loose ends that could have been tied up a bit better. And will the truth be one Marnie wants to remember? Although this book stands alone readers of the previous two titles will appreciate the depth of storyline and characters that Templeton has built upon in this volume. Aline Templeton loves writing crime novels because of the thrill, the puzzles and the anticipation of what will happen next in the story. Another great book by Aline Templeton and one I would have no hesitation recommending. A lot of people in this small town are suspect and it is up Lying Dead is the second Marjory Fleming novel that I have read. Not the best in a whodunit.
